The Ostu dij Baloss is a Saluzzo restaurant that is a celebration of Piedmont cuisine at it’s best. Truly a treat and the cherry on top of a day spent in
Saluzzo.
The restaurant is located in a 15th century nobles house right in the heart of the old town. The chef Davide Mesta has won many Italian culinary awards and is a master of Piemontese cuisine and yet the prices are also very reasonable. The misto di antipasti is fantastic and allows one to sample all the antipasti on offer – also try their vast range of local salamis. This is a great place to try the bagna cauda, though the braised beef in red wine, done in the traditional Piedmont way, should also be considered. For dessert my favourite is the Semifreddo al Rum e Marron Glacè though my wife prefers the Bavarese al cioccolato bianco con salsa al caffè - a decadent treat of white chocolate and coffee. Full of calories but who cares!! The restaurant is actually divided in two. The top floor, still authentically decorated in 15th century style, hosts the acclaimed restaurant specializing in Piedmont cuisine, though Italian cooking from other areas is occasionally included on the menu. The second floor is 100% authentic traditional. Only local specialities from Saluzzo and the surrounding areas are prepared. An extensive wine list of over 800 wines is available, many Italian grape varieties are featured but in the main the wines focus on Piedmont wines from the nearby Italian wine route. Some great Barolo vintages are available – not the cheapest but – in my opinion – well worth the prices.
