Le Marche Italy Restaurant Review
Il Frantoio, Fermo (Ascoli Piceno), 0734.217116
Restaurants in Italy don’t come better than this. Even if the food was not out of this world - which it is - this restaurant would be worth visiting anyway.
Il Frantoio is located in a twelfth century cellar – converted to an olive oil mill in the sixteenth century. The restaurant is right in the heart of the medieval old town of Fermo. The food, respecting the magnificent building, is true to ancient Le Marche traditions. Traditional cuisine based on time-honoured Le Marche recipes. Everything is prepared only with fresh seasonal ingredients, nothing frozen, canned or from anywhere outside of this region is served – only fresh and local. The welcome here is always as warm as is the atmosphere. The first time I ate here I was made to feel that we were locals and part of the family. Service is excellent, not overbearing, and just perfect. There is a good selection of local wines and the desserts made in house are also great. I normally don’t like the Le Marche desserts much but these are worth trying. The salamis and cheeses, all made locally, are mind-blowing. I sometimes come here for just a glass of red wine, more like a bottle, but don’t tell anyone, and eat only cheese and salami – absolute heaven!! The wild boar salami is marvelous and it goes so well with those full bodied local red wines. The main courses offer an opportunity to try the le Marche cuisine of the interior with many roast dishes of pork and lamb – my suggestion would be to try the mixed roast, the arrosto misto. The local sausage main course is another worthy contender. Prices are very reasonable with most main courses costing less than EUR10.
